Circadian lighting research report now available

The Society is pleased to confirm that the final research report from a recent project focused on circadian lighting is now available online. Circadian lighting effects on health and wellbeing is a research project jointly funded by the BRE Trust and CIBSE, investigating circadian lighting and its effectiveness, and how it should be controlled. The final report has been published via the CIBSE Knowledge Portal as Research Insight: Circadian Lighting.
The project set out to try and identify the best way to control circadian lighting under real world conditions. This report gives an overview of the work carried out, including key findings from the initial literature review and then summarises the field study and the main results. It provides key considerations and tentative recommendations based on the study findings.
Prior to the publication of this report there was a workshop, attended by industry and academic experts on the topic; a comprehensive literature review (Ticleanu, 2017); a report describing proposals for experimental work; a progress report detailing work carried out to November 2017; an interim report giving initial experimental results up to March 2018; and a progress report detailing work carried out until March 2018. Two draft papers were produced (Ticleanu and Littlefair, 2018; 2019) providing findings of case study experiments comparing circadian and conventional lighting.
The report highlights the following findings, amongst further observations from the field study:
It is difficult to achieve a standard 'dose' of light for everyone in a multi-occupant space with conventional ceiling lighting, as the amount of light reaching people's eyes will differ considerably depending on their position within the space, even when the lighting appears to be uniform.
The importance of a balanced visual environment was illustrated following participant feedback, which led to altering surface materials to reduce the amount of light being reflected off desks.
The field study highlighted the critical role of effective lighting control, with participants preferring dynamic lighting and electing to keep it at the end of the study.
