This course is based on the British Standard: BS 5266-1 2016, the code of practice for emergency lighting.

It will explain in detail the recommendations of the code and how it should be applied to assist compliance with Fire Safety legislation. Topics include:

  • Regulations, standards and when emergency lighting is needed
  • Types of emergency lighting
  • Exit sign formats, luminance and viewing distances
  • Spacing data for escape routes and open areas
  • High risk task area suggestions
  • Central safety power systems
  • Compliant documentation process

Learning Outcomes

Delegates will gain a robust understanding of the regulations and recommended practices, and feel confident in implementing these in their work.

All course delegates will be provided with a comprehensive manual covering the material included in this unit and additional support material, serving as a valuable point of reference after completion of the course. The ongoing assessment included in the course will allow the trainer to monitor progress and provide additional assistance to learning where required.

  • Types of emergency lighting.
Session 2
  • Exit sign formats, luminance and viewing distances. 
  • Luminance requirements, lux levels, uniformity and duration requirements. 
  • Modes of operation including design procedure covering specific points of emphasis.
Session 3
  • Spacing data for escape routes and open areas. 
  • High risk task area suggestions including assessment for new emergency safety lighting category.
Session 4
  • Central safety power systems. 
  • Basic installation, wiring and fuse protection. 
  • Testing and maintenance to meet BS 5266-8. 
  • Automatic testing. 
  • Compliant documentation process with a run through of BS 5266 part 1 2016 annex’s H,I,J,K,L & M. 
  • Supporting documentation to enhance and develop Fire Safety Risk Assessments.

This course is aimed for engineers with a basic knowledge of lamps and light fittings aiming to add emergency lighting principles and design to their range of skills and services, and for more experienced engineers who already have knowledge and experience in this field.

Ian Watts has 25 years of experience working with a wide range of fire and lighting manufacturers. He was co-opted onto BS 5266 part 1 in 2015 as the independent industry expert on new technology through his work with innovative manufacturers.  

Ian has lectured for CIBSE, The Lighting Industry Association and FIA since 2012.

Siegfried is currently a Senior Lecturer in Building Services Engineering at School of the Built Environment and Architecture, London South Bank University (LSBU). Prior to joining LSBU, he was an Assistant Professor in Building Services Engineering/Building Physics at the University of Nottingham’s overseas campus in China. Siegfried has over 15 years research and teaching experience in Building Services Engineering. He has a PhD in Engineering (Sustainable Energy Technologies) from the University of Nottingham. He is a Fellow of the Higher Education Academy (FHEA), qualified Advance HE External Examiner, a Chartered Engineer, and a Member of CIBSE (MCIBSE).

Remote - How to join: 

This course will be conducted live online via Microsoft Teams. You do not need a Microsoft Teams account. After finalising your booking, you will receive a confirmation email containing a link to join the session. 

You can join using your preferred web browser. Alternatively, if you have the Microsoft Teams desktop app installed, simply click 'join meeting' in the email to connect directly through the app. 

Face-to-Face: 

The course location will be listed below the corresponding date and included in your booking confirmation email, sent after your booking is finalised. Please arrive at the location 15 minutes before the start time. 

Note that face-to-face courses are not available online, so your in-person attendance is required.  

Catering will be provided during the course. If you have any food allergies or intolerances, please inform us in advance by emailing [email protected] so we can make suitable arrangements. 

Please be aware that parking is not available at the venue. 

Course Materials: 

The course presentation and any additional materials will be provided to delegates on the day of the course, once attendance has been confirmed. You will receive links via email to download these materials via email. For those attending a remote course, the materials will also be shared through the Microsoft Teams chat.
