Accreditation of Academic Programmes

Programme accreditation through CIBSE, a professional licensed body of the Engineering Council, is highly valued within the industry. Accreditation of academic programmes by recognised professional and statutory bodies is a mark of assurance that the programmes meet the standards set by a profession.

In the UK, the Engineering Council (EC) sets and maintains the standards for the engineering profession and the overall requirements for accreditation. The Engineering Council licenses individual professional engineering institutions including CIBSE to undertake the accreditation within these requirements - interpreting them as appropriate for their own sector of the profession - and maintains the registers of accredited programmes.

CIBSE uses the accreditation process to assess whether specific educational programmes provide some or all of the underpinning knowledge, understanding and skills for both CIBSE membership and EC registration in a particular category.

Students who have completed a CIBSE accredited programme will have met the Engineering Council academic requirement for registration with the Engineering Council. ‘Accreditation' means that the academic qualification has met the standard for Chartered Engineer (CEng) and also full Member of CIBSE or Incorporated Engineer (IEng) and Associate Member.
