We would prefer to accept drafts as Microsoft Word files with as little formatting as possible, as all formatting is stripped from the draft when it is imported into our publishing program. Please do not use company templates, or try to lay out the document to look like other CIBSE publications. If you would like to use a different word processing program, such as Google Docs or Open Office, this is fine; but again, keep formatting to an absolute minimum.

Please do not create the text in columns. One column, such as is the default in Microsoft Word and all other word processing programs, is best.

Please do not add any logos, borders, headers, footers, or other layout features to your draft, and keep design to a minimum.

The simplest formatting is best for tables and bulleted lists – please use the standard format.

CIBSE publications are structured using five levels of headings and subheadings; these are normally numbered (1.1, 1.1.1, 1.1.1.1, etc.) These numbers are added during editing and production, so it is not necessary for you to add them to your draft. Automatic numbering can be very fiddly in longer Word documents, and can cause headaches! As long as the level of heading is clear to the editor, we will be able to add the numbers in later – and you will of course have the opportunity to check them once the layout is complete.
