The team behind Broadcasting House, London - AECOM
For over 15 years, AECOM has collaborated with the BBC to help transform its property portfolio across the UK, working closely with development partner Land Securities, contractors Lend Lease and Overbury, and architects Sheppard Robson. The award-winning transformation of the BBC's 80-year-old, Grade II listed Broadcasting House site into a high-tech, BREEAM Excellent media hub is the largest and most significant project the team has worked together on to date.
Behind this complex development is a pioneering partnership that has resulted in the creation of one of the world's most advanced and sustainable newsrooms and studios. Opened by Her Majesty the Queen in June 2013, it recently picked up the British Council for Offices National Innovation Award and Regional Corporate Workplace Award for London. The drivers behind the project were threefold: Broadcasting House was no longer suitable in the digital age, with failing broadcasting infrastructure; the BBC was looking to rationalise its sites; and it needed to bring together all live broadcasting units.
Ambitious sustainability targets were embedded into the project briefs as the team worked to bring energy consumption down within a high-demand environment. The experience gained now informs industry-wide guidance on low-energy studio design, and is expected to deliver savings of £736m over 20 years. The team met all the significant challenges through their collaborative approach, innovative design and construction technologies, creating a new, flexible workplace for over 5,000 staff, which can respond to future changes. Design solutions were based on a full understanding of the business and changing practices.
