Foundation: Fire Safety

This course will cover fire science and principles including fire risk assessment, HM fire  safety guides and overview of fire legislation and guidance.

Advanced: Fire Safety

This course will cover external fire spread, prevention, protection and management, including ADB and PAS 79.

Residential Fire Sprinkler Design BS9251

Residential fire sprinklers are becoming much more common in recent years particularly after the Grenfell Tower disaster in June 2017 which killed 72 people and has led to wide ranging changes to Building Control requirements.  All buildings over 30m high and all blocks of flats over 11m high now have to be protected by a sprinkler system.

Fire Safety BS9991: Means of Escape

1. Locate, understand & apply the recommendations for deck access contained in BS9991
2. Locate understand & apply the recommendations for cluster flats contained in BS9991
3. Locate understand & apply the guidance covering compartmentation requirements contained within BS9991
4. Use the guidance contained within BS9991 to amend compartmentation requirements in line with ventilation factors
5. Locate understand & apply the guidance contained within BS9991 covering suppression systems including extended travel distances
6. Locate understand & apply the guidance contained within BS9991 covering

Fire Safety in the Design, Management and Use of Buildings: BS 9999

  • Be able to describe the minimum package of fire safety measures for each risk profile
  • Be able to calculate extended travel distances and reduced widths allowed by additional fire protection measures.
  • Be able to use the guidance to assess levels of compartmentation
  • Be able to use the document to assess fire safety measures in shopping complexes
  • Be able to use the document to assess the access and facilities for firefighters
  • Be aware of the breadth and importance of fire safety management to maintain a safe building

Fire Alarm Detection and Codes BS 5839-1: 2017

BS 5839-1, Fire detection and fire alarm systems for buildings, is the code of practice for design, installation, commissioning and maintenance of systems in non-domestic premises. This one day course will allow you to gain a thorough understanding of BS 5839-1 and the changes in the new 2017 version.
